What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser Hair Removal is a technique that uses beams of highly concentrated light to penetrate the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by pigment in the follicles and destroys the hair within them. Laser hair removal is among the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the U.S. Lasering does not work well on light-colored hair, red hair, grey hair, white hair as well as fine hair of any color, such as vellus.

For optimal hair reduction, you will need 8 treatments done at intervals of 6-12 weeks, which is when hair grows back out again. Additional treatments for laser parameter adjustment may be required if your skin is dark or tanned.

Lasers treat hair follicles best when they are in their active state of growth. Because hair has three phases of development which are anagen (the growing phase), catagen (the resting phase) and telogen (the shedding phase). Not all hairs are simultaneously growing. Only the active phase has hair follicle, the presence of which is required for destruction of stem cells of the hair follicle and thus permanent hair removal of the treated hair. As a result, multiple treatments are needed to achieve the highest levels of permanent hair removal.

What Can I Expect During My Treatment?

For the treatment, a laser hand piece will be applied to the skin of the treatment area and with each pulse you will feel a “hot rubber band” sensation. Please let the Esthetician know if you are feeling pain instead of tolerable discomfort. During treatment you will be given goggles to wear. Even with the goggles you might see/feel flashes of bright lights, which is normal. Safe and effective treatment is achieved by destroying hair follicles without causing damage to the epidermis (the tissue making up the skin composition surrounding the hair shaft). Once a hair follicle is destroyed, it will never produce hair again. Any remaining hair follicles will produce hairs that are lighter and thinner, requiring much less attention than before.

NOTE: If you are taking any antibiotics, taking medications that may cause sensitivity to the sun, are currently tanned or using Retin-A in the area you would like to be treated, you will have to wait at least two weeks after stopping these to receive any lasering.
